The Big Hayfield Crawler - Ilfracombe, Queensland
An Allis Chalmers, K series Kerosene tractor, 50 H.P. Weighing 51/4 tons. Purchased late 1936 by Jim Pidgeon this was he first crawler in the area. Using a 1 1/2 yard Baker scoop, the machine was used on significant projects at Wakefield Station, Isisford and Royston Station, Ilfracombe.
The plant was requisitioned by the army during World War 2 and Jim went as the operator. It was used to help build the dirt highway from Tambo to Blackall, and then the Longreach Airstrip. It was then used to build numerous dams in the channel country, some for Sir Sydney Kidman.
